Prayers & Squares is an interfaith outreach ministry that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand-tied quilt. The idea behind these prayer quilts is simple. A heavy thread is used to take stitches through the quilt layers, and the ends are left free to be tied with square knot. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is said for someone in special need, who then receives the finished quilt.

This Prayers and Squares Ministry is world wide. We are Chapter #648. To date, the ladies from The Crossing and ladies from the local Quilters Guild have sent out 18 prayer quilts. We started our ministry in May of 2007 when a member of our church shared about how much her husband's quilt had meant to them during his fight against liver cancer. As she stood in front of the church, telling her story, she kept clutching her quilt to her chest. She told how she and her husband would take it to his treatments and would finger each prayer knot as they waited together for the doctor or nurse to visit. Since then, fabric and batting has been donated (we have two totes full right now), and volunteers have cut 6 1/2 " squares. Others have sewn them together then we have quilted them with yarn to be tied as a prayer is said. Members of our church and the Baptist Church in Joseph have participated in the praying and tying of knots. We have passed the quilts with loose threads around at our bible study groups and at church on Sunday. We have gotten amazing response from the recipients and their families. One man, while in a Portland hospital, had his on his bed al all times and it became a testimony to his faith. Nurses were instructed to always leave it close to him. When his daughter picked it up to take to him, she said, " I may just hang on to it all the way to Portland." I said, "That's what it's for." A women who lost her husband of 29 years sent a thank-you card with such touching words. We always ask if it is OK to pray for someone and then what they want to ask prayer for. That way we can all be together in our prayers. A short history is pinned to each quilt to that the prayer warriors are aware of each individual situation. To date we have had a prayer quilt almost every Sunday. God's grace has been full in us as this ministry has been easy. We don't discriminate about who we make a prayer quilt for. If we are asked, we get busy and supply one. Our quilts have gone as far away as Boise, Portland and Spokane but mostly locally. Help with cutting fabric, donating fabric (100% cotton), sewing or tying knots is always needed. There is a part for everyone to participate in. It is not about the quilt, it is all about the prayers. Thank-you for your prayers and your interest in this ministry.
